Winning 50% of the time, over 100 trades you’d more likely than not hit a run of 6 losses in a row. The chance of a run of 10 or more is 4.4%.

Assumes each loss is the full risk amount, worked out from your balance at the time. Real trading includes spreads, slippage and gaps that can make losses bigger. Education only, not financial advice.

Why risk per trade matters so much

Losses compound. Lose 10 trades in a row risking 1% each and you’re down about 10%, which needs an 11% gain to win back. Do the same at 5% a trade and you’re down 40%, which needs a 67% gain just to get back to where you started.

Long losing runs are more common than most people expect. Even winning half your trades, a run of six or seven losses somewhere in 100 trades is more likely than not. Small risk per trade is what keeps you in the game long enough to learn.

How the numbers are worked out

Each loss takes your chosen % of the balance at that moment. “Gain needed to get back” is the % you’d have to make on what’s left to return to your starting balance. The streak odds are calculated exactly for 100 trades at your win rate, assuming each trade is independent.
