Position size calculator

Work out your lot size before every trade.

Fill in your entry and stop to see your position size.

A learning tool, not advice. Uses standard contract sizes (1.00 lot = 100,000 units; gold = 100 oz) and indicative exchange rates. Always double-check the size on your broker’s platform before you place a trade.

How to use it

  1. Enter your account balance in pounds and the % you’re willing to risk on this trade.
  2. Pick the pair. Tap “Live” to drop in the current price as your entry.
  3. Enter your stop-loss price (and a take-profit if you have one).
  4. Read off your lot size, pip value and the most you could lose. Then double-check it on your broker’s platform.

Common questions

How do I work out my position size in Forex?

Decide how much of your account you're willing to lose on the trade (many traders use 1%), measure the distance from your entry to your stop-loss in pips, then divide the money at risk by the pip distance to get the value of each pip. The calculator turns that into a lot size for you.

What is a lot in Forex?

A standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency. A mini lot (0.10) is 10,000 units and a micro lot (0.01) is 1,000 units. For gold, 1.00 lot is usually 100 ounces.

Why does my account currency matter?

Pip values are worked out in the pair's second (quote) currency, so for a £ account they need converting back to pounds. The calculator fills in today's exchange rate automatically.

What should I risk per trade?

That's your decision, and this isn't advice. Many educators teach 1% or less, because small risk lets you survive the losing streaks every trader has. Try our losing streak simulator to see why.
